A bus (archaically also autobus, motorbus, omnibus, multibus,) is a road vehicle manufactured to carry several passengers. Buses can comprise a capacity as high as 300 passengers. The most popular type of bus is the single-decker rigid bus, with bigger loads carried by articulated bus and double-decker, and smaller loads carried by minibuses and midibuses; coaches are used for longer-distance services. Various types of buses, such as inter-city coaches and city transit buses, charge a fare. Other types, such as elementary or secondary school shuttle buses within a post-secondary education campus do not charge a price. In many jurisdictions, bus drivers need a special license beyond and above a regular driver’s license.

Buses can be used for schedule coach transport, school transport, tourism, private hire or scheduled bus transport; promotional buses may be used for political campaigns and others are privately operated for a broad range of purposes, including pop band tour vehicles and rock.

Horse-drawn buses were used from the 1820s, followed by steam buses in the 1830s, and electric trolleybuses in 1882. The first motor buses or internal combustion engine buses were used in 1895. Recently, interest has been develop in fuel cell buses, and electric buses, hybrid electric buses, as well as ones powered by biodiesel or compressed natural gas. As of the 2010s, bus production has increasingly globalised, with the same designs showing all over the world.

Bus is a clipped form of the Latin word omnibus. The first horse-drawn autobus service was started by a businessman named Stanislas Baudry in the French city of Nantes in 1823. The first bus parked in front of the store of a hatter named Omnés, which had a great signal reading “Omnes Omnibus”, a pun on the Latin-sounding name of that hatter; omnes describes “all” and omnibus means (among other things) “for all” in Latin. Nantes populace soon gave the nickname omnibus to the vehicle. The omnibus in Nantes was a triumph and Baudry moved to Paris and introduced the first omnibus service there in April 1828. The same service was launched in London in 1829

The first automatically propelled omnibus appeared on the streets of London on 22 April 1833. Steam carriages were much less likely to overturn, they travelled faster than horse-drawn carriages, they were cost effective to run, and caused much less harm to the road surface because of their wide tires.
